Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then located many other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say early analysis indicate the fluid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; officials are currently not cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking official said the incident left him stunned and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he stated on online, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
