A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
